Tuesday blaze destroys Bertie home

ASKEWVILLE – A late afternoon blaze, believed to have started in the garage, totally destroyed a residence here late Tuesday afternoon.
According to Daniel White with the Askewville Volunteer Fire Department, a call was received and answered around 4 p.m. of a house fire near Bakertown and Wakelon Roads in the Askewville community.
White said when fire units arrived, the home – 822 Wakelon Road, Windsor – was completely engulfed in flames.
There was one occupant in the home at the time of the blaze, but they were able to escape safely.
In addition to Askewville, the Merry Hill-Midway VFD also aided in battling the blaze with the Windsor Fire Department also rendering assistance.
Following a near three-hour effort, the blaze was finally contained around 7 p.m.
