Braves edge Rebels in Junior Legion contest

WINDSOR – The Ahoskie Post 102 Braves beat the Windsor Post 37 Rebels 6-4 in a junior American Legion game here Wednesday night.
Ahoskie opens the scoring with 2 runs in the top of the first. Hunter Mitchell doubles to left center. Evan Lassiter is hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Keyshawn Lassiter scores on a Spencer Simonowich RBI single to right. Evan Lassiter holds third on the play. On a double steal, Simonowich is out at second and Evan Lassiter steals home. Post 102 leads 2-0 after 1 inning.
Ahoskie adds 4 runs in the top of the fourth. Ethan Hughson singles to right and goes to third as Tyrek Beverly reaches second on an error. Hughson and Beverly score on a Ryan Rowe 2 run single to left. Rowe scores on a Mitchell RBI double down the left field line. Pinch runner Keyshawn Lassiter scores on an Evan Lassiter RBI single to right. Ahoskie leads 6-0 after 4 innings.
Windsor scores 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth. With 2 outs, Zeb Askew hit an infield single, steals second and scores on an Alden Cottle RBI single to left. Wood Trowell reaches first on an error. Cottle and Trowell score as Brandon Ball reaches second on an error. Lane Slachta walks. Ball scores on a Bryce Stevens RBI single to right. Ahoskie leads 6-4 after 6 innings.
Windsor threatens in the bottom of the seventh. Again with 2 outs, Askew has an infield single and Cottle walks. A strikeout ends the game.
Mitchell pitches 5 2/3 innings for the win for Post 102. Evan Lassiter pitches the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.
Trenton White pitches 4 innings for the loss for Windsor. Cottle pitches the final 3 innings.
Ahoskie has 8 hits. Rowe, Mitchell, and Evan Lassiter have 2 hits. Hughson and Simonowich have 1 hit.
Windsor has 4 hits. Askew has 2 hits. Cottle and Stevens have 1 hit.
Post 37 head coach Bobby Harmon said, “In the first four innings we were flat. We battled to the end. We tried to make a comeback but came up short. Ahoskie held on for the win.”
Post 102 head coach David Ellis said, “Hunter pitched excellent for us and Evan came on for the pitching save. You have to give Windsor credit as they battled back, but we hung on for the conference win.”
Windsor is 5-4 and 4-2 in the conference and will play Clayton at home in a doubleheader today (Saturday) at 3 p.m.
Ahoskie is 7-5 and 4-3 in the conference and will play Cary at home in a doubleheader today (Saturday) at 2 p.m. They will also play at Bear Grass Sunday at 4 p.m.
