WINDSOR – Bertie County Sheriff John Holley announced this week that a Superior Court Grand Jury had returned indictments against 24 individuals – 23 in the county – on illegal narcotics charges, including 10 that have not yet been located and arrested.

Holley said the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics/Gang Unit in conjunction with the Down East Drug Task Force has conducted numerous covert drug operations throughout Bertie County since October of last year.

The Down East Drug Task Force was formed just eight months ago, but it has already made some of the largest drug busts in Roanoke-Chowan area history. The task force is comprised of the Northampton, Hertford and Bertie sheriff’s offices as well as the Ahoskie Police Department.

After arresting approximately 21 suspects in Bertie County in a previous operation in September 2016, the Narcotics/Gang Unit immediately began another campaign in October of 2016 that lasted until July/August 2017.

“This operation was based mostly on citizen complaints and information provided anonymously through the Sheriff’s Office or direct communication with Drug Agents,” Holley said.

Bertie County Drug Agents began identifying the sources of those illegal narcotics sales and began investigating along with Drug Agents assigned to the Down East Drug Task Force.

Holley said in 2017, the Aulander Police Department began initiating drug cases in the Town of Aulander with the assistance of the Down East Drug Task Force.
