Saturday featured a men and women’s doubleheader against the Lions.  The men played first and the Hawks dominated the attack outshooting the Lions 28-10.  Chowan held the advantage with shots on goal at 8-2.

Denis Roule and Lee Wattam led the charge for the Hawks with nine and eight shots respectively; both tallied three shots on frame.

Hawks goal-keeper Elliot Chadderton (1-1-1) had a quiet day in cage as the netminder tallied one save and his second consecutive clean sheet.

The back-line of the Hawks: James Scott, Toby Sims, Jamie McNicholas, and Mike Dowling limited the Lions’ chances as they produced two shots on goal.  McNicholas also recorded a team save in the contest.

Chowan will take a step out of league play hosting Shippensburg in a non-conference match today (Tuesday) Sept. 12 with kick-off set for 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Chowan women (2-0-1) remain unbeaten as the Hawks caged a pair of Lions on Saturday and Sunday; first, with the Lady Lions of Emmanuel, 5-0, and then caging the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) 8-0 on Sunday afternoon.

In their first-ever Conference Carolinas match-up, the women booters followed the men on Saturday and it was an all-freshman affair with the scoring.  Four different first-year Hawks found the back of the net in the contest led by Carolina Lucci with two goals, one in each half.

Twins Sydney and Sabrina Henderson also tallied their first collegiate goals in the contest with one apiece in the second half.

With a 4-0 lead, the Hawks then used fresh legs in the later stages of the match as Coach Chris White emptied his bench.  Sierra Gonzalez received the ball near midfield and found herself on a breakaway getting past defenders and finishing the run with a goal near post for the Hawks’ final score of the match.

Reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, Olivia Borer, picked up her second consecutive shutout posting two saves.

Sunday, the Hawk women had the pitch all to themselves and six different players scored for Chowan, five of those being freshman.

Lucci and Hope Kohl netted two goals each in the onslaught, while Gonzalez, Stephanie Quintanilla, Monae Moore, and Marissa Speary also found the back of the net.

Mackenzie Imamura tallied her second assist of the weekend with Abaigeal Peck, and Sabrina Henderson assisted on a goal each.

The Hawks defense has been stellar all season as Chowan has not allowed a goal to open the season.  In fact, the last time Chowan was scored upon was Oct. 22 during their contest with Limestone last season.  Borer and the Hawks have registered 402:44 minutes of action without allowing a goal. That mark is a program record.

Lucci’s weekend performance earned her the Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.

The Monaca, PA native posted eight points on four goals leading Chowan to a 2-0-0 record and 2-0-1 on the season.

Lucci currently leads the conference in goals (4) and game-winning goals (2), while ranking second in points (8).
