AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie man is hospitalized from gunshot wounds while his brother sits in jail for allegedly pulling the trigger.
McCoy Lee Dickerson is being held under a $750,000 secured bond after he was charged on Saturday night for shooting his family member. Dickerson was charged with one felony count each of attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill causing serious injury, and maiming of a nose, lip, ear or limb.
He is scheduled to make his initial appearance on Tuesday (Oct. 10) in Hertford County District Court.
According to Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh, two of his officers – K9 Sgt. Michael Kellett and Patrolman Chris Westbrook – responded to a call involving a shooting shortly before 7 p.m. at 302 Creekside Court Apartments. The responding officers were aware that the suspect was still at the scene.
“Upon arrival, my officers received information that one man discharged a shotgun at his brother and the victim had serious injuries,” said Fitzhugh. “We were able to quickly secure the scene and take the suspect into custody, which allowed Hertford County EMT’s to safely come in and attend to the medical needs of the victim.”
Fitzhugh identified the shooting victim as King Dickerson Jr. He added that both brothers resided at Apartment 302 in Creekside Court.
King Dickerson Jr. was transported by EMS to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and later transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Fitzhugh said APD Lt. Detective Jeremy Roberts was called to the scene where he collected evidence, which included a shotgun.
“I would like to commend my staff for their professionalism and fast action to save a life and to secure the suspect while on the scene,” Fitzhugh said.
