AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie resident was shot and killed outside of his apartment here early Saturday morning.
Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh identified the murder victim as 29-year-old Reco Larone Lewis of Kennedy Court Apartments. Fitzhugh said Lewis died at the scene.
The Police Chief did not reveal the number of times the victim was shot, nor the type of gun used in the slaying.
“We are waiting on the results of the autopsy,” Fitzhugh said Saturday afternoon, responding to questions from the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald as to how many times was Lewis shot and the caliber of the weapon used.
In a media release sent out Saturday, Fitzhugh reported that the Hertford County E-911 Communications Center received a call referencing shots fired at approximately 4:35 a.m.
Upon the arrival of the first Ahoskie Police units to Kennedy Court, they located an unresponsive male lying face down in the grass in front of Apartment 8. He was later identified as Lewis, who resides at Apartment 9.
Fitzhugh said additional APD officers and detectives were summoned to the scene, as were Hertford County Sheriff’s deputies. The North Carolina SBI was called to assist with the crime scene investigation.
“We need the help of our citizens and anyone who knows anything about this murder,” Fitzhugh said in a statement.
Those with information are encouraged to contact APD Detective Justin Farmer or the NC SBI at 252-756-4755.
Fitzhugh thanked the SBI, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Hertford County Emergency Medical Services, and the Ahoskie Fire Department for their assistance.
