Pungo Academy – 14
In Lasker, Northeast –Hobgood opened defense of their 2017 NCISAA 1-A state title in a big way by cruising past Pungo Academy, 60-14.
J.T. Simmons led the way, rushing for 294 yards and scoring five touchdowns.
The outcome was never in doubt as NEA-Hobgood led 22-0 in the opening seven minutes and took a commanding 52-8 lead at halftime.
Pungo is fielding a varsity football team for the first time.
Community Christian – 36
Lawrence Academy – 6
In Merry Hill, Lawrence Academy returned to the gridiron following a one-year absence, but Community Christian played the role of spoiler as they defeated the home-standing Warriors, 36-6.
Lawrence’s lone touchdown came on a 60-yard pass from Tyler Wheeler to Brian Hughson.
Wilson Hunt – 14
Hertford County – 0
In Ahoskie, visiting Wilson Hunt spoiled the Bears home opener and HCHS fell to 0-2 on the young season as the Warriors won, 14-0.
Hunt led 8-0 at halftime and added an insurance touchdown early in fourth quarter to account for the final score.
The Bears drove to Hunt’s eight yardline with a shade over six minutes left in the game, but failed to score.
