AHOSKIE – A local man was found shot to death behind the wheel of a vehicle here Sunday night and a murder investigation is underway.
Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said the victim is 20-year-old Armin Trevon Cherry of Ahoskie.
Fitzhugh added that the call came in to his office at 8:45 p.m. regarding the incident at the corner of Everett Street and South Catherine Creek Road.
“Upon the arrival of my officers –Naomi Mizelle and Sgt. Christopher Westbrook – they located a vehicle parked in a residential driveway at that address,” Fitzhugh said. “They observed a male slumped over in the driver’s seat and immediately summoned Hertford County EMS.”
Upon the arrival of the EMS crew, they determined that Mr. Cherry was deceased.
The murder scene was cordoned off and the North Carolina SBI was called to assist with the investigation.
“We are actively working this case along with the SBI and seeking information from anyone with knowledge of this shooting or who may have seen something at or near that area around 8:30 to 8:45 p.m. Sunday,” said Fitzhugh.
Those with information can share it with either Ahoskie Police Detective Justin Farmer or SBI Agent Colleen Cloutier.
There were other reports of shots fired in Ahoskie on Sunday. Fitzhugh confirmed that two parked and unoccupied vehicles in the 200 block of South McGlohon Street were struck by bullets at an unknown time. Additionally, the Police Chief said shots were fired into an occupied dwelling in the 300 block of North Mitchell Street at 10:35 p.m. Fortunately, no one inside was injured.
“We have collected evidence in all three of those cases,” Fitzhugh said. “At this point we do not know if the murder and these other three reported shootings are related. That is certainly part of our investigation.”
The Ahoskie Police are also investigating two other crimes on Sunday….the theft of a vehicle in the 500 block of Hill Street (reported at 2:14 a.m.), and larceny from a motor vehicle parked in the 800 block of West Hayes Street (8:22 a.m.). The stolen vehicle is a white 2003 Honda Accord with dark tinted windows and an NC registration.
