COLERAIN, NC – Edna Rae Morris Matthews, 80, of 605 Morris Ford Road, Colerain, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020 in Roanoke Landing Health and Rehabilitation Center, Plymouth.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Bertie County on June 11, 1939, and was the daughter of the late Sebron C. and Foye Jernigan Morris. A retired self-employed farmer, she was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. A strong Christian woman, she faced many trials during her life but always came through smiling and looking at the positive side of matters. A caring woman who would do anything to help anyone, she had a very forgiving soul, and was a beautiful lady inside and out.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Allen Matthews; a grandson, Justin Matthews; sisters, Lois Lassiter, Sylvia Macon, Barbara Perry, and Sybil Mitchell; and by brothers, Walter, Staley, and Earl Morris.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Rhonda Barber and husband, Mike, of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Jeffery Matthews and wife, Sherri, of Colerain; three grandchildren, Brianna Edwards (William) of Colerain, Candace Barber (Mark) of Maine, and Alex Barber of Mexico; two great-grandchildren, Cloey and Colton Edwards of Colerain; two sisters, Marie Harrell of Rich Square and Margie Liverman of Newport News, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews, and extended family members.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. in Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1325 Meadow Road, Colerain, and will be conducted by Pastor Channan Brinkley. A private inurnment will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

Friends may join the family for a time of visitation in the church immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence.
