MURFREESBORO – Chowan University has been carefully following the developments with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in conjunction with medical experts and in close coordination with the state and local public health experts. To date, Chowan has no reported cases or self-reports of exposure on campus. Decisions made are based on available data and careful analysis of mandates and guidelines concerning COVID-19.

Chowan has become a virtual university, completing the remainder of the spring 2020 semester in an online learning setting. At this time, the university is not closing campus operations, but taking the necessary precautions to protect the campus community. Many offices and resources have or may move to remote assistance.

“While we are in unprecedented times, the University maintains its commitment to her students. Central to our mission is maintaining the most sacred ceremonies, such as commencement. We recognize this event happens but once in a lifetime. Accomplishing this task is monumental in the current state of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic,” the University said in a statement released on Wednesday, March 25.

Commencement 2020 originally scheduled for May 9 has been postponed until December 19. That commencement will honor candidates for graduation from July 2019, December 2019, May 2020, July 2020, and December 2020. However, on May 9, the University will hold a virtual celebration for those who were slated to receive their diploma that day.

All University updates will be sent via university email. Operational changes will be posted on the university website at chowan.edu/coronavirus, sent via CUHawkAlerts, and posted on university social media outlets.
