COLERAIN, NC – Venell Baker Byrum, age 94, of the Perrytown Community, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. Byrum was born on October 17, 1925 to Dwight and Eula White Baker in Colerain, NC. Venell and her husband owned and operated J E Byrum General Store in Perrytown for 50 years. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and Eastern Star.
Venell was a very outspoken, vivacious, called it like she saw it person. She was very active in her community, always there pitching in doing anything she could to help. She enjoyed making things for people, from sewing something for them, to baking them a birthday cake. Venell had a quote that she truly lived by, “you are never lost as long as you have enough gas in the car.” Venell will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Along with her parents, Venell was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Byrum; her son, Eddie Byrum; and her brother, Delhart Baker.
Venell is survived by her daughter, Glenda Byrum Campbell of Colerain; her granddaughter, Pamela Campbell of Durham; and her sister, Valarie Evans of Merry Hill.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, March 31, 2020, from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC.
A celebration of life graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at 2:00 pm at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, NC, with Rev. Tommy Tripp officiating.
