Northeast Academy tennis splits first two matches of 2020

LASKER – Northeast Academy got its 2020 tennis schedule off to a winning start here Tuesday, Sept. 15 where they defeated Kerr-Vance Academy, 5-2.

The Lady Eagles won three of the five singles matches as top seeded Jessie Martin defeated Leah Moseley (6-0, 6-3).

Third seeded Lizzie Smith was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Sabrina Odom.

In the #5 match, Harley Pierce claimed a 6-0, 0-6, 10-8 victory against Kaiya Patton.

Northeast swept the two doubles matches as the duo of Martin and Smith topped Moseley/Libby Cash (8-1) while Emalee Jones and Kiersten Flythe teamed up to defeat Sabrina Odom and Kiytona Patton (8-6).

One day later (Wednesday, Sept. 16), Northeast traveled to Lawrence Academy where the Lady Eagles fell, 5-4.

Martin (6-2 and 6-0 vs. Emma Cobb), Jones (6-2, 6-2 vs. Isabella Spruill), and Smith (6-4, 6-4 vs. Perris Clayton) notched singles wins for the Lady Eagles.

In doubles, Martin/Smith were 8-4 winners over Cobb/Spruill).

For Lawrence, they collected singles wins thanks to Annie Hayes Trowell (6-0, 6-0 vs. Flythe) and Lucy Spruill (6-0, 6-0 vs. Pierce); and an 8-6 victory by Clayton/Trowell over Jones/Flythe in the #2 doubles match.

Lawrence’s other two team wins came by forfeit (#6 singles and #3 doubles) as Northeast is only fielding a team of five players this season.
