Cold start dooms Chowan ladies in season opener

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team had an icy start to their 2020-21 campaign, shooting 28.8% from the floor in an 81-52 loss in Conference Carolinas action here on Wednesday evening vs. Barton.
Destiny Robinson led Chowan with 10 points, while Demetria Bland scored eight points. Newcomer Kyani Moore chipped in with six points and a team-high six rebounds.
Chowan shot 28.8% from the floor, while Barton posted 44.1% mostly in the paint. The Hawks committed 21 turnovers leading to 27 points for the Bulldogs.
The game saw nearly two minutes of scoreless action to start before Barton broke the seal. Robinson posted a layup on the next possession to put the Hawks on the board.
After a 5-0 run by the Bulldogs, Kandis Johnson and Emaree Hinton joined in the scoring column with a basket each to pull the contest to 7-6. Moore knocked down a jumper to trade baskets with Barton, 10-8.
Barton would finish the last 3:41 of the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 22-8 after the opening stanza.
The run continued for Barton to open the second period, pushing their lead to 28-8. The Bulldog advantage swelled to 36-10
Jazmine Davis and Moore notched a layup each before a pair from the stripe by Robinson and a jumper by Bland provided a spurt by the Hawks, who trailed 41-20 at halftime.
Chowan went on an 11-4 run to start the second half as Bland and Jones scored on back-to-back possessions. Bland converted from the stripe along with a jumper by Destiny Bland and a triple by Brianna Copeland trimmed the deficit to 45-31.
Demetria Bland added another pair of freebies along with a layup by Hinton and Robinson to keep the game within reach. Moore tacked on a pair from the stripe before a quick 5-0 run to end the quarter by the Bulldogs pushed their lead to 57-39.
Barton dominated the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, going on a 19-4 run aided by five Hawks’ turnovers.
The Hawks would counter with a small 7-2 run as Keibra Hopkins started it off with an old-fashioned three-point play. Aniah Patterson and Johnson notched a bucket each.
Chowan (0-1) is scheduled to take on North Greenville on the road on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16, in Conference Carolinas action.
