Bears outduel Eagles for conference lead

ELIZABETH CITY – In a battle for sole possession of the league’s top spot, Hertford County gained that position here Tuesday night with a come-from-behind 56-47 win over Northeastern High School.
With the win, Hertford County improved its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Northeastern fell to 6-2 (4-1).
The Bears clung to a 28-24 lead at halftime, but Northeastern surged ahead in the third quarter, taking a 42-35 advantage into the final period of play.
Hertford County outscored their hosts, 21-5, in the fourth quarter to gain the nine-point win.
Israel Powell (17 points) led a trio of HCHS players in double figures. Daylan Askew added 12 points while Ashton Lassiter chipped in 10.
Rounding out the HCHS scoring were Keondre Rodgers (8), Quinton Wright (4), Keveon Rodgers (3), and Quadre Douglas (2).
In the girls game, Hertford County recovered from a sluggish start to score 44 points in the second half en route to a 58-50 win.
The Lady Bears trailed at halftime, 18-14.
Hertford County placed three players in double figures: Tamia Britt (18), Kanae Edwards (15), and Desiree Askew (14). Adding to the winning effort were Qua’Dajah Ruffin (4), Daysha Holloman (4), and Christian Olds (3).
The Lady Bears improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
