Bears sweep; win conference title

AHOSKIE – Two wins over a 24-hour period have locked up the Northeastern Coastal Conference championship for Hertford County High School.

On Monday night, the Bears built a double-digit halftime lead (37-24) en route to a 72-55 win over Northeastern High School.

One night later (Tuesday), HCHS rode a balanced scoring attack and routed Currituck County, 74-41.

Those two wins gave the Bears the league title as they remained unbeaten in conference play (7-0) and overall (9-0).

HCHS is scheduled to close their regular season on Thursday, Feb. 18) on the road at First Flight High School. The state play-offs begin next week.

In Monday’s win, Daylan Askew led the way with a game-high 25 points. Keondre Rodgers (14) and Quinton Wright (12) also struck for double figures.

Rounding out the HCHS scoring were Israel Powell (6), Ashton Lassiter (4), Keveon Rodgers (4), Quadre Douglas (4), and William Valentine (3).

Askew was again Hertford County’s top scorer in Tuesday’s win vs. Currituck where he tallied 14 points. That effort allowed the senior sharpshooter to break the 1,000-point scoring barrier for his career.

Adding to the winning effort were Keondre Rodgers (13), Valentine (12), Wright (10), Keveon Rodgers (9), Powell (6), Lassiter (4), Jayden Daniels (4), and Demari Guess (2).

Also on Tuesday, the Lady Bears improved their record to 5-1 overall (3-1 in league play) as they hammered Currituck, 66-14.

Leading the victorious effort were Qua’Dajah Ruffin and Tamia Britt, each with 11 points. Kanae Edwards and Ashley Jenkins both finished with nine points. Rounding out the HCHS scoring were Desiree Askew (8), Briyana Ratcliff (5), Adarielle Townsell (4), Daysha Holloman (4), Jabrea Everett (3), and Jaliyah Mitchell (2).
