Prayer vigils planned for accident victims

AHOSKIE – Two prayer vigils are planned in the wake of a motor vehicle accident near here Tuesday night that claimed the life of one teen while injuring three others.

According to a Facebook post from First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, the accident – which occurred on Newsome Grove Road – tragically took the life of 18-year-old Finn Dunn. Fletcher Pierce and Baron Chamblee, both age 16, and 17-year-old Emma Cobb were seriously injured. They are hospitalized at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

A prayer vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at Ridgecroft School on the baseball field. Another prayer vigil is being held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Beechwood Country Club on Hole #10 at the cross.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to a preliminary report, NCHP Sgt. Scott Richardson said the 18-year-old driver of a Volvo SUV was traveling west on Newsome Grove Road at around 11 p.m. Coming out of a curve, the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road where it impacted a culvert, causing it to become airborne. The vehicle then struck a tree and overturned before coming to a stop.
