COLERAIN – Jesse Lee Askew, 81, of 333 Sand Hill Road, Colerain, NC, died Sunday, October 3, 2021 in Vidant Bertie Hospital, Windsor.
Mr. Askew was born in Bertie County on April 6, 1940, and was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Askew and Delsie Cleo Ward Askew. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Hoggard and Rose Mizell; and by brothers, Thomas, Earl, and O.D. Askew.
In earlier years Mr. Askew farmed, and later worked in maintenance with Perdue Farms, Inc. in Lewiston-Woodville. With his friend Benny Parker, he owned and operated J & B Carolina Grilling-Catering Service. Together they specialized in cooking and serving groups at business gatherings, reunions, church functions, and community suppers.
An avid fisherman, he had participated in many tournaments and had received plaques, trophies, and NC Wildlife Resource Commission certifications recognizing his catches. He was a member of Colerain Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife of 21 years, Annette Perry Askew; and her sons, Greg Bowen (wife, Jimi Lynn) of Merry Hill, and Gary Bowen of Robersonville, and their families, including eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, and will be conducted by the Rev. Tommy Tripp. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
