AHOSKIE – The North Carolina SBI has been contacted to assist the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office in an investigation of a deputy-involved fatal shooting that took place near here this morning (Wednesday).

Bertie Sheriff John Holley told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that his deputies were answering a call in the area of Center Grove Road around 10 am. They encountered a female, armed with a weapon, outside her residence.

Holley said that deputies made several requests for the female to drop the weapon, but she refused to heed those commands. He added that the female walked towards the deputies, still holding the weapon, at which time the fatal shot was fired.

Sheriff Holley stated that more details would be made available later today.
