FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – Late free throws by Young Harris College handed Chowan’s men’s basketball team a 90-86 loss in the season opener on the road on Friday evening.
Christian Koonce and Jay Estime paced the Hawks with 21 points each. Daylan Askew and Isaac Hippolyte contributed 10 points each.
Young Harris went to the free throw line 20 times in the first half, while converting 27-34 in the contest. The Mountain Lions went on a 10-2 run in the final 4:29 to seal their win.
Chowan’s last lead (86-85) came with 90 seconds remaining on Estime’s pull up jumper from the baseline. The Mountain Lions took advantage of free throws to pull ahead 88-86 with 28.4 remaining. On the next possession for the Hawks, the shot would be blocked, forcing the Hawks to foul and Young Harris sealed it from the charity stripe.
