Bears advance to tournament championship game

Hertford County High School’s varsity boys will play for the 2022-23 Northeastern Coastal Conference Tournament championship.

The Bears, who won the league’s regular season title, defeated fourth-seeded Manteo, 67-41, during Wednesday’s semifinal round held at the Northeastern High School gym.

HCHS (20-4 overall) will host the tournament championship game in Ahoskie at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. There, the Bears will meet Northeastern High School (15-8 overall). The third-seeded Eagles knocked off #2 First Flight, 61-60 in overtime, during Wednesday’s semifinals.

Hertford County’s girls, seeded third, also competed in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday where they dropped a 58-39 decision to second-seeded Manteo.

The Lady Bears, who fell to 16-8 overall, kept it close for three quarters. Manteo outscored HCHS 20-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Manteo (16-5 overall) takes on regular season champion Northeastern (23-1) in the girls tournament championship game, scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Feb. 17 at the HCHS gym.
