Hawks fall in overtime

MURFREESBORO – Victoria Brown’s goal with less than a minute to go to give the Chowan women’s lacrosse team the lead would not hold as the Hawks would be denied their first win of the season, falling 13-12 in overtime against Edinboro here Tuesday.
Grace Taylor led the Hawks with seven points, recording four goals and three assists. Victoria Brown added three goals and three assists.
Sarai Reyes-Roman posted two goals, while Cameryn Barrow, Trinity Walker, and Rebekah Lucas added one goal each.
Ariel Johnson posted a career-high 14 saves in goal.
Chowan would take an early 3-0 lead as Taylor found the back of the net off an assist from Naila Smith. Brown scored off an assist from Barrow prior to a goal by Taylor.
Edinboro rallied to score four unanswered goals before Reyes-Roman scored off an assist by Brown to even the score at 4-all.
Barrow scored off an assist by Taylor to put the Hawks on top. Walker and Brown found the back of the net to put the Hawks up 7-6 at intermission.
Taylor scored off an assist by Walker, but Edinboro rallied for a 10-8 lead. Taylor would score to cut into the deficit before Rebekah Lucas would score off an assist by Barrow.
Reyes-Roman scored a woman-down goal to even the score before Brown scored with 53 seconds remaining to give the Hawks a 12-11 lead.
Edinboro rallied to send the contest to overtime, scoring a goal with 20 seconds remaining.
Chowan had a chance in overtime for the winner but Brown’s shot would be turned away. Barrow had a free position attempt blocked.
Edinboro would find the back of the net on a free position attempt with 27 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
Chowan (0-5 overall) steps back into league play as the Hawks take on Lees-McRae on Saturday, March 11. Opening draw control is slated for 3 pm.
