AHOSKIE – Two local individuals were shot and killed near here early Friday afternoon.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes did not release the names of the victims, saying only they were ages 46 and 17.

Hayes said the call came in at 1:39 p.m. for “shots fired” at a residence at 302 Jernigan Airport Road.

“When we arrived on the scene we found two victims laying in the yard of the residence. Both were deceased,” Hayes said.

Hayes said the two victims are not related. He did not say if one or both of the victims resided at that address.

He added that several bullets did strike the residence, but there was no one inside the home at that time.

A motive for the fatal shootings is unknown at this time.

“Through our investigation we have been able to develop potential suspects,” Hayes said

No arrest warrants had been drawn as of 10:30 p.m. Friday.

“We will release more information as the investigation progresses,” Hayes said.

The North Carolina SBI is assisting the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
