WINTON – SGM Eugene Fields “Gene” Brown, US Army Retired, 90, of 126 Old US Hwy 13, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2023 at ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Brown was born in Hertford County on February 5, 1933, and was the son of the late James Edward and Louetta Collins Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Spears, and by brothers, Horace and Samuel Brown.
A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gene proudly served his country for 22 years. His station assignments included Ft. Pope, LA; Bamberg, Germany; the Pentagon; and Ft. Lee, VA. In addition to being a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Winton, he dedicated himself to the roles of trustee and treasurer for 27 years.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Yvonne Anderson Brown; their four children, Kim Brown of Harvest, AL, Kevin Brown (Sherry) of Chesterfield, VA, James Brown (Rhonda) of Gatesville, and Karen Howard (Terrence) of Gurley, AL; two sisters, Nell Blaylock and Nita Boone, both of Winton; a sister-in-law, Joyce Brown of Richmond, VA; and eight grandchildren, Terrence and Justin Howard, Jeremy Williams, Erica, Austin and Lauren Brown, and James and John Brown.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Winton, and will be conducted by his son, Pastor James Brown. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Monday, June 12, 2023 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the church, 515 S. Main Street, Winton.
A committal service with military honors will be held later this month at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the First Baptist Church Anniversary/Bell Project, in care of Maggie Anthony, Treasurer, PO Box 654, Winton, NC 27986.
