PENDLETON – Montie Esther White Jenkins, age 95, of Britton Road, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family

Montie was born on September 1, 1927 to Rufus Jennings White, Sr. and Hettie Mae “Kitty” Cannon White in Northampton County, North Carolina. Montie graduated from Conway High School as valedictorian of her class. She attended UNC-G and in her sophomore year she transferred to Wake Forest College and graduated in 1948. She married James Jenkins in November of 1948. They lived in Boykins, VA where she taught History and Math at Boykins High School for 5 years. They moved to Pendleton, NC and began their family. In 1959 before having their last child, complications with a brain tumor shortened her teaching career. After recovering, she dedicated her life to becoming a devoted mother. She had 12 grandchildren who loved their “Grand-Ma Montie”.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Wilfred Jenkins; and sisters, Kathleen Woodard, Betty Lou Taylor; and great grandson, SJ Martinez.

Montie is survived by her children, James “Jimmy” Jenkins, Jr. (Pamela) of Glen Allen, VA, Donna Jenkins Young (Jim) of Raleigh, NC, Jeannette “Jeannie” King (Bob) of Bellevue, Washington, and Kelly Jenkins (Jill) of Greensboro, NC; five granddaughters, Susan Hooks Sumrell (Jonathan), Rachel Young, Rebecca Brodin (Jonathan), Alison Martinez (Samson), and Annabel Jenkins; seven grandsons, James “Jay” Jenkins III (Whitney), John Jenkins (Britany), Samuel Young, Daniel Young, James King (Kara), Benjamin Jenkins, and Luke Jenkins; three great-granddaughters, Grace Sumrell, Lucy Sumrell, and Macey Brodin; three great-grandsons, McCormick Jenkins, Harrison Brodin, and Jameson Martinez; brother, Rufus Jennings White Jr. (Anne) of Conway; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 27, 2023, from 1-1:45 p.m. at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church, Pendleton, NC with a celebration of life service to follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mike Currin officiating. The burial will follow at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
