Eagles fall on the road

WILSON – Northeast Academy suffered a hard-fought 22-20 loss here Friday night at Community Christian School.
The Eagles (1-1 overall) rallied from a 14-6 deficit and took a 20-14 lead thanks to touchdown runs from the Vann boys: 10 yards by Dalton (followed by a two-point conversion run by Dawson) and Dawson’s 33-yard scamper to the endzone at the 8:36 mark of the third quarter.
Community Christian tied the score at 20-20 thanks to a 1-yard TD run by Jack Beamon with a shade over 90 seconds left in the third period. Bailey Bunn then connected with Beamon on a successful two-point conversion pass that later proved as the home team’s margin of victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, Community Christian tallied the game’s first touchdown when Tavares Williams scored on a 9-yard run. The conversion failed, leaving the Cyclones with a 6-0 lead at the 9:29 mark of the second quarter.
The Eagles tied it at 6-6 when Dalton Vann rumbled into the endzone on a 13-yard run with 4:45 left in the first half. The conversion run failed.
Community Christian answered, taking a 14-6 lead when Beamon tossed a 50-yard scoring pass to Matthew Jackson with 58 seconds left on the second quarter clock. Beamon added the conversion run.
Northeast finished the night with 167 yards of total offense, all on the ground. Dawson Vann led that effort with 82 yards on 11 carries. Dalton Vann added 55 yards on 10 rushing attempts while Nathan Trevino chipped in 43 yards on eight carries.
The Vann brothers along with Trevino led Northeast defensively, each with five tackles. William Coggins added four tackles.
Community Christian finished with 249 yards of total offense (157 rushing and 92 passing).
Northeast is scheduled to travel to Mattamuskeet High School for another non-conference test on Friday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
