Third arrest made in June shooting

WINDSOR – The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office has made another arrest in a shooting that occurred June 12 near Kelford.
In a press release sent to this newspaper, Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said that Jaylen Shacar Norfleet of Kelford
Is in custody in connection with the shooting.
Bertie County Deputy R. Gaskins took Norfleet into custody on Monday afternoon.
Norfleet was charged with two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is and confined in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $75,000 secured bond.
Two others were earlier charged in the shooting: Nakwon Wiggins of Lewiston Woodville and a juvenile.
The investigation began upon Bertie Sheriff’s deputies arriving on the scene June 12 after receiving a call of several shots fired in the Kelford community. Upon the initial investigation it was discovered that two houses and some vehicles were struck by bullets.
Investigators continued to work the case and were able to identify three suspects and obtain warrants for their arrest.
Deputy Gaskins was assisted by Lt. M. Phelps and Deputy R. Dozier in making the arrest on Monday.
“I want to commend the Bertie County Investigations Division for their hard work and dedication to the citizens of Bertie County and for the numerous hours spent to solve cases,” said Sheriff Ruffin.
