AHOSKIE – Pansy Christine “Spank” Phelps White, 83, of Morris Road, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, September 8, 2023 at her home. Pansy was born on May 19, 1940, a daughter of Lester and Margret Phelps of Windsor, NC.
In 1971, Pansy began working in cosmetology and continued for over fifty years. She was a member of the Roanoke Chowan Cosmetology and Hairdresser Association. She served her community in Ahoskie, NC, in many ways. She supported the Ahoskie band through the Ahoskie Band Boosters. She served the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Auxiliary for 44 years and served three terms as President. She served as the Ahoskie Rural Fire Department Secretary since the early 1980’s and was known as the First Lady. After retirement from Cosmetology, she worked as a representative for Earlys Baptist Church and served in their Food Pantry for 15 years.
Pansy had vast hobbies, but her favorite was gardening. She never saw a flower she didn’t like.
Pansy was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Ross Phelps of Colerain, and Ray Phelps of Windsor; brother-in-law, Thomas Lee, and nephew, Colon Lee of Smithfield, VA.
Pansy loved and looked after her family through the years. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Earl White; her three sons, Robert Lester White, Jeffery Todd White, and Patrick Rennie White, all of Ahoskie; her granddaughters, Christine Michelle Moore (husband, Matthew Moore), and Candace White of Severn, NC; along with two great-grandchildren, Hailey Anne Moore, and Billy Thomas Moore; sister, Susie K. Lee of Smithfield, VA; sisters-in-law, Sandra Phelps of Colerain, NC, and Polly Phelps of Wilmington, NC.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 15, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC. A Celebration of Life memorial service will begin at 12 noon at the same location with Rev. Joshua Prosser, officiating.
