RICH SQUARE – A local man was arrested here on Aug. 31 on a fugitive warrant from the State of Virginia.

Michael Powell, age 50 of Rich Square, was wanted by the Greensville County (Virginia) Sheriff’s Office for two counts of breaking & entering, one count of grand larceny, and one count of felony destruction of property.

Upon his arrest, Powell was held without bond for the fugitive warrant pending extradition to the State of Virginia.

On Aug. 31, the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Ahoskie Police, and Greensville County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at a residence outside of Rich Square on Highway 258.

Northampton Sheriff’s deputies assisted the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation of a breaking and entering / larceny that occurred Aug. 21 at a business in Virginia. Upon investigation by Greenville Co. Sheriff’s Office, it was discovered that one of the suspects occupied a residence in Northampton County.

Upon searching the residence on Aug. 31, Powell briefly barricaded himself inside and later fled on foot out a rear window. After a brief foot chase, Powell was captured.

Upon his arrest, Powell was also charged locally with possession of a firearm by a felon. For that charge, Powell was held under a $50,000 secured bond.
