Chowan soccer sweeps Erskine

DUE WEST, SC – Chowan University’s soccer teams each collected their first wins of the season here Saturday with a sweep over Erskine in Conference Carolinas action.
In the women’s match, Chowan used three goals in the second half to power past their hosts, 4-0.
Natasha Bailey’s goal, assisted by Ysa Novak, just past the 6 minute mark staked the Hawks to an early lead.
Karla Artolozaga registered her first collegiate goal in the 65th minute for a 2-0 lead. Mayara Engel assisted on that goal.
Four minutes later, Baily scored again, this time on an unassisted goal.
Nicole Mejia added a goal two minutes later, assisted by Bailey, to complete the shutout victory.
Lauren James picked up the victory in goal, posting 79:41 of action in relief with one save.
The Chowan men’s team found the back of the net seven times in the second half on their way to an 8-2 victory over Erskine for their first win of the 2023 season.
Charley Leech collected the opening goal for the Hawks to equalize the score at 1-1. Leech also added an assist.
Junior Smith tallied two goals, while Bradley Binns added a goal and two assists.
Abdoulie Sanneh, Alex Espinoza, Sam Deacon, and Hlynur Fridriksson notched a goal each.
Ausar Omwenga had two assists, while Kai Rymes added an assist.
The Chowan women will host Barton College in Conference Carolinas action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The men face Barton at home at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
