MURFREESBORO – Chowan dropped a non-conference football contest to nationally-ranked Benedict, 31-3, here Saturday on a wet and muddy afternoon.

The Hawks struggled to find much offense, recording a season-low 104 total yards (65 passing, 39 rushing). The Hawks produced 10 first downs with three coming on penalties.

Chowan trailed by only three points (6-3) early in the second quarter after Jose Colunga booted a 28-yard field goal to cap a 12-play drive. But the visitors, who improved to 4-0 overall, put the game away by answering with three touchdowns prior to halftime to claim a 28-3 advantage.

Defensively, Evan McGhee led the way as he tallied nine tackles, followed by Abdural Lee and Dwayne Smith with eight tackles each.

Jayshaun Alston posted 2.0 TFLS and a forced fumble.

Nic Wilson registered his second interception of the season.

Chowan (0-4 overall) returns to Gulf South Conference action as the Hawks host Valdosta State on Sept. 30. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
