Ridgecroft sweeps TIC tennis titles

MURFREESBORO – On the heels of their perfect regular season (6-0) in league play, Ridgecroft School won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches en route to capturing first place in the Tarheel Independent Conference tennis tournament.

Ridgecroft hosted the conference tournament on Monday at the Rose Family Tennis Courts on the campus of Chowan University.

In singles play, Ridgecroft’s #1 seed Belle Turner posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Addie Phelps of Lawrence Academy.

Second-seeded Kate Chamblee gave Ridgecroft another win with her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lawrence Academy’s Lucy Spruill.

Ridgecroft’s Molly Brown, seeded fourth, handily won her match (6-0, 6-0) against Laura Beth Bryant of Lawrence Academy.

Sixth-seeded Annie Batts added a win for Ridgecroft with her 6-4, 6-3 victory against Sarah Corey of Lawrence.

In doubles play, Turner teamed with Chamblee to defeat Katie Baxter and Melanie Rutledge of Pungo Christian Academy, 8-2.

Ridgecroft notched another doubles victory when Karley Jo Rose teamed with Molly Brown to defeat Williamson/Blackman of Pungo Christian, 8-6.

During the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the tournament, Turner was named All-Conference as well as the league’s Player of the Year.

Others named All-Conference were Kate Chamblee (Ridgecroft), Addie Phelps (Lawrence), Kate Baxter (Pungo), Arlen Davis (Northeast Academy), Kaitlyn Williamson (Pungo), Lucy Spruill (Lawrence), and Melanie Rutledge (Pungo).
