WOODLAND – Luther Joyner Barnes, a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away at the age of 82 on November 28, 2023, at ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Hertford County, NC. Luther was born on April 27, 1941, in Northampton County, to the late Pollock “Pal” Tenille Barnes and Annie Rae Joyner Barnes.
Luther was a talented barber, dedicating himself to his craft throughout his career. He had a special way of connecting with people and enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends and customers at the barber shop. Luther was a wonderful provider for his wife and son and that was always his first priority. His warm personality and sense of humor brightened the lives of all who knew him. Beyond his work, Luther had a number of interests that brought him great joy. He loved fishing, whether it was in fresh water or surf fishing at the coast. He also cherished traveling to watch his son Paul play beach music at various venues. Luther and Paul shared a love for MMA matches, always enjoying the excitement of the sport together. Additionally, Luther found immense happiness in visiting his granddaughter Lyla and riding motorcycles. Luther was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church, where he lent his voice to the choir. He and his wife Jeanne sang duos for weddings, bringing beautiful melodies to such special occasions.
Along with his parents, Luther is preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Barnes. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories to be cherished by his surviving family members. Luther is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanne; his son, Paul (Jessica) Barnes of Fort Mill, SC; his sister, Peggy Britt of Milwaukee; and his brother, John William Barnes of Potecasi. Luther will also be deeply missed by his adored granddaughter, Lyla Dare Barnes of Fort Mill, SC. Luther will forever be remembered as a kind-hearted and loving individual who brought laughter and joy to those around him.
A memorial service to honor Luther’s life will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Woodland Baptist Church in Woodland, NC, with Rev. Dr. J Brabban officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends to provide comfort and support during this difficult time.
