WINDSOR – A local man is behind bars here, held under no bond, for alleged sex crimes with a minor three to four years ago.
The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40-year-old Letron Effrin Sumner of Aulander on Dec. 12. Sumner is charged with three counts of statutory rape of a child less that age 15, three counts of incest, two counts of attempted sex act by parent/custodian, and one count disseminate obscenity to minors.
Summer is confined at the Bertie Martin Regional Jail under no bond.
Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said investigators began to build a case against Sumner in April of this year.
Ruffin noted that lead Investigator B. Turner received a report from Tyrell County DSS in reference to inappropriate sex acts with a minor. After the initial report, Turner conducted interviews and then followed up with Tedi Bear Children’s Advocacy Center to assist with the investigation. Tedi Bear Children’s Advocacy Center specializes in assessment, treatment, education, and prevention for children up to 18 years old who may have been victims of child abuse or neglect. Turner also worked closely with District Attorney Kim Gourrier Scott’s office during the investigation.
Through his extensive investigation, Turner found that between 2019 and 2020, Sumner inappropriately performed sex on minors. At the time of the incidents, Sumner, along with the victims, lived in the Lewiston Woodville area.
After Turner completed his investigation, he presented the case to a grand jury. On Dec. 8, a True Bill of Indictment was issued for Sumner.
