Hawks head into holiday break with win over Cavaliers

WISE, VA. – RJ Wilson’s three-pointer with just under a minute to go gave the Chowan men’s basketball team enough distance to fight off the Cavaliers of UVA Wise, 79-76, in non-conference action here Monday afternoon.
Daylan Askew led the Hawks with 20 points and nine rebounds, scoring 14 points in the second half. Wilson added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Damerius Summers added 10 points off the bench.
Chowan trailed 9-0 early before ending the first half on a 22-9 run to lead 36-28 at the intermission.
The Hawks would build their lead to 16, 46-30, with 16:13 remaining before UVA Wise regained the lead, 71-69, with 2:24 left in the contest.
Wilson knocked down a three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining to give the Hawks a 77-74 lead and that basket proved as the difference in the contest.
Chowan (6-5 overall) takes time for the holiday break before returning to the court on Dec. 30 when the Hawks travel across the Great Dismal Swamp to take on Elizabeth City State. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
