GASTON – Mrs. Edith Raye Harrington Smith, age 87, formerly of Aulander, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2024 with her family by her side.
Mrs. Smith was born in Hertford County, NC on January 23, 1936, a daughter of the late Roy Fay Harrington and Elia Terry Harrington.
Mrs. Smith graduated from Aulander High School and Chowan College where she received a certificate in business education and music. She worked with the State Highway Department and W. H. Basnight & Co. and Ahoskie Methodist Day Care. She played the piano and organ at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church and several other churches in the area from the age of 9 to 79 years old.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Cleveland Smith; two sisters, Thelma Mae Dempsey, and Macy Miller; a brother, Odice Lee Harrington; a nephew, Hilton Earl Miller; and a niece, Teresa Miller Futrell.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Lou Ann Smith Simmons (Brian) of Gaston; a grandson, Austin Cleveland Simmons (Stephanie) of Virginia Beach, VA; a granddaughter, Kelli Vinson (Josh) of Pendleton, NC; a great grandson, Bransen Thomas Vinson; a niece, Glenda D Francis (Ron) of Danville, VA; a great niece, Courtney Farmer (Chris) of Danville, VA; and a great great niece, Charleston Farmer.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 from 1-1:45 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, with a celebration of life service beginning at 2 p.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Taylor Latham and Pastor Greg Hurdle officiating. Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC
