Chowan sweeps Converse on the road

SPARTANBURG, SC – Chowan University notched two important wins on the road here Saturday, sweeping Converse College in Conference Carolinas action.

The women’s team got the sweep started as they held off Converse over the final three and one-half four minutes to secure a 64-57 victory.

Chowan’s defense held Converse to 1-of-9 shooting in the final 3:25 of the contest.

Tynasia Bunting led the Hawks with 18 points off the bench. Meara Carter posted a career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Desiree Askew and Imani Hickman added 10 points each. Askew also chipped in nine rebounds.

The Chowan women improved to 5-2 in league play (5-6 overall) with the win.

In the men’s game, the Hawks held Converse to a season-low shooting percentage while Cheick Traore etched his name into the Chowan record books in a lopsided victory, 76-59.

Traore hauled in his 507th career rebound early in the second half to claim the top spot in Chowan’s Division II history in career rebounds. Traore recorded 11 rebounds on the night.

Chowan (10-6 overall; 4-3 in league play) held Converse to 21.4% shooting in the first half and a season-low 28.8% (17-of-59).

The Hawks shot 45.6% (26-of-57) from the floor, including hitting 11 three-pointers.

Chowan cleaned the glass as well with a plus-28 on the rebounding margin (54-26) which helped the team improve to 7-1 on the road this season and notch their fifth straight road victory.

Daylan Askew posted his ninth 20+ point scoring outing of the season to pace the offense. Skyler Davies added 16 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Aaron Ross added 13 points off the bench. Damerius Summers hauled in a team-high 13 rebounds.

Chowan continues their road trip as the Hawks take on divisional opponent, Mount Olive, on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in Conference Carolinas action. The women’s game tips-off at 5 p.m. followed by the men’s contest at 7 p.m.
