Askew nets career high as Hawks hold off Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE – Daylan Askew’s record-setting performance here Wednesday night helped Chowan’s men’s basketball team edge Mt. Olive, 88-84, in Conference Carolinas East Division action.
Askew, a former standout at Hertford County High School, scored a career-high 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. That marked the 10th time this season that Askew has scored 20-or-more points, which is the most in Chowan’s DII history in a single season.
Preston Le Gassick added a double-double with a career-high 11 assists to go with 12 points. Skyler Davies chipped in 13 points, while RJ Wilson contributed 14 points and nine rebounds.
Cheick Traore hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Hawks (11-6 overall; 5-3 in the conference; 2-2 in the East Division) improved to 8-1 on the road this season. The win on Wednesday was Chowan’s sixth straight road victory.
Chowan returns home to take on league newcomer, Young Harris, on Saturday, Jan. 20.Tip-off is slated for 4 pm.
