Askew hits buzzer beater as Chowan wins on the road

FLORENCE, SC – Daylan Askew drained a mid-range jumper with 0.6 seconds left to lift the Chowan men’s basketball team to an 86-84 victory over Francis Marion in East Division Conference Carolinas action here Tuesday evening.
Following a timeout with 8.9 seconds remaining, Askew knocked down the jumper, just inside the right wing, for the game-winning basket.
Askew finished with 18 points and seven assists.
Preston Le Gassick tallied 21 points, while Skyler Davies tied a career-high with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Davies added six rebounds and five steals.
RJ Wilson collected a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams shot 50% in the opening half but the Hawks had the advantage from behind the arc on their way to a 55-39 halftime lead.
Chowan raced out to a 22-8 run to start the game and led by as many as 19 (44-25).
Francis Marion went on a 21-9 run over an eight-minute stretch of the second half to even the score at 84-all.
The Hawks improve to 9-2 on the road this season. They now stand at 13-7 overall (7-4 in the conference, and 3-2 in the East Division).
In the women’s game on Tuesday, Chowan held a 39-37 halftime lead, but couldn’t hold off the hot shooting of Francis Marion in the second half as the Hawks dropped an 89-73 decision in an East Division Conference Carolinas contest.
The Patriots shot 62.5% from the floor in the third quarter to pull away.
Five Hawks scored in double-figures with Meara Carter leading the way with 12 points and six rebounds. Tynasia Bunting, Sydney Roberts, and Imani Hickman added 11 points each. Desiree Askew tallied 10 points.
Chowan forced 26 turnovers, but could not capitalize on the miscues leading to only 17 points.
Chowan hits the road for their third straight road contest when the Hawks take on Belmont Abbey on Saturday, Feb. 3.
