MURFREESBORO – Daylan Askew broke the Chowan Division II single-game scoring mark with 39 points to lift the Hawks to an 87-78 win over Barton here Wednesday night in Conference Carolinas action.
The victory handed the Hawks a season sweep of their conference rivals.
Askew collected 39 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the floor and 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.
He broke the record held by Jaylen Dillard (38 points, at Southern Wesleyan).
Skyler Davies and RJ Wilson added double-doubles for Chowan. Davies collected a career-high 16 rebounds to go with 10 points and two blocks. Wilson added his 11th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Damerius Summers tallied seven points, five rebounds, and four blocks in 10 minutes of action.
Both teams battled hard. Neither could gain more than a five point advantage in the opening frame as the halftime score settled at 38-37.
Chowan trailed 39-38 early in the second half before Askew hit a triple and the Hawks never looked back.
Barton knotted the score at 64-all and 69-all, but could not regain the lead.
The Hawks went on a 9-2 run in the final 90 seconds.
Chowan (14-8 overall; 8-5 in the conference; 4-2 in divisional play) continues their home stand as the Hawks take on King in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is slated for 4 pm.
