HCHS girls, boys advance in tourney

AHOSKIE – Hertford County High School’s girls and boys basketball teams swept Manteo here last night (Tuesday) in the opening round of the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament.
In the girls game, HCHS raced out to a 22-0 lead en route to a 66-13 win.
Jaliyah Mitchell led the Lady Bears with 28 points. Brooklynn White also struck for double digits by adding 14 points. Adarielle Townsell had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with her seven points.
In the boys game, Hertford County routed Manteo, 83-23. No individual stats were available.
Both HCHS teams have advanced to tonight’s (Wednesday) tournament semifinals at home.
The Lady Bears (18-7 overall and seeded #2 in the tournament field) will meet third-seeded First Flight High School at 5:30 p.m.
The top-seeded HCHS boys (17-8 overall) will host #4 Currituck County at 8:30 p.m.
The tournament championship games will be held on Friday, Feb. 23 at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City. There, the winners of Wednesday’s semifinal games will meet at 6 pm (girls) and 7:30 pm (boys).
