Records fall as Chowan sweeps Lees-McRae

MURFREESBORO – Records are made to be broken.

A pair of Chowan University basketball players notched their names in the record book here Saturday where the Hawks swept visiting Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas women’s and men’s basketball action.

In the women’s game, Tynasia Bunting broke Chowan’s single-game scoring record with 39 points to highlight a 91-59 victory. By connecting on 12-of-19 shots from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-pointer range, Bunting surpassed passed Chowan Hall of Famers Talaya Lynch and CC Vaughan for the single-game record (37 points).

Meara Carer, honored for Senior Day, posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Yasmine Brown added 13 points.

Chowan (13-8 overall and 13-4 in league play) shot 66.7% from the field in the third quarter leading to 34 points.

The Hawks outscored the Bobcats 56-28 in the second half.

In the men’s game, Daylan Askew tallied 22 points to become Chowan’s DII single-season scoring leader with 505 points. The record (503 points) was set by Chowan Hall of Famer Jaleel Nelson during the 2009-10 season.

Askew also added 10 rebounds.

RJ Wilson led the Hawks (18-8 overall and 12-5 in the conference) with a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Preston Le Gassick chipped in with 10 points. Skyler Davies, honored before the contest for Senior Day, tallied eight points, six rebounds, and four blocks. Paul Whitby, also honored for Senior Day, posted two points in five minutes.

Both Chowan teams will wrap up their regular season schedules on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at UNC Pembroke. The women’s game tips off at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
