Dempsey erupts for 50-plus, leads Bertie into Eastern semifinals

DURHAM – Zymiere Dempsey scored a career-high 52 points here Tuesday night, leading Bertie High School to an 82-58 win over Voyager School in the third round of the NCHSAA Eastern 1A State Playoffs.
The victory advances Bertie (25-4 overall) to Friday’s (March 8) Eastern semifinals at Washington High School. The two conference rivals have already met three times this season with the Falcons winning twice.
On Tuesday, Dempsey was nearly unstoppable for the Falcons. He connected on 17-of-31 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, while adding a 15-of-15 effort from the free throw line. Dempsey also hauled down 11 rebounds and finished with five steals.
Tequan Holley chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds for Bertie.
Dwight Anderson led Voyager with 14 points.
