AULANDER – The Hertford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion on Saturday night (April 20) where a victim was shot in the neck.
Sheriff Dexter Hayes said the crime took place at a residence on NC 305 near its intersection with NC 561 (near Tri-County Airport).
There, deputies responded at around 10 pm, finding a male victim with a gunshot wound to the neck. Hayes said deputies assisted the victim with first aid until Hertford County EMS arrived and transported the man to ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital. The victim was treated and released.
According to Hayes, the victim stated he was awakened by a noise in the home and when he looked out of the window, he noticed what he thought was a white sedan parked in the driveway.
The victim heard the noises again and when he went to investigate he was shot by someone in front of him and fell to the floor.
The only description he could give deputies was two people ran out of the home and one was wearing a red shirt/hoodie.
Hayes said deputies processed the home and later learned no items were taken.
The Sheriff added that during the initial investigation, deputies made contact with three juveniles in the vicinity of the home invasion. The juveniles didn’t match the description given by the victim, so they were released to their parents.
A juvenile petition was obtained on one of the juveniles on an unrelated charge.
Hayes thanked the Ahoskie Police Department, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office for answering the call for assistance in the case.
