WINDSOR – Three juveniles stand charged in an attempted murder that took place March 31 near Kelford.

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said that as of today (Friday, April 26), two 16-year-old males and a 17-year-old male have been detained on juvenile petitions. Each is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill causing serious injury, and armed robbery.

The juveniles were remanded to the Pitt County Juvenile Detention Facility in Greenville.

“I’m so proud to be able to quickly report that in such a short period of time since the incident, the Investigative Division of our office has worked tirelessly to solve this case,” Ruffin said in a statement. “Our mission remains to stop these acts of senseless violence involving guns and drugs in Bertie County providing more peace and safety throughout each community, ensuring a safer place to live, work, play, and worship.

“It’s so important that we all do our part now more than ever to talk with the youth of our communities and work to lead and guide them towards a more positive productive way of life,” Ruffin added.

On Easter Sunday (March 31), Bertie Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of Governors Road (NC 308) in reference to a report of a male subject found lying in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds. Deputies responded to the area and confirmed the victim had been shot multiple times. The victim was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Ruffin said his deputies secured and preserved the crime scene at which point the BCSO Investigative Division began their preliminary investigation into the incident. Investigators quickly identified three juveniles as suspects in the incident.
