AULANDER – The person responsible for leading a Highway Patrol Trooper on a high-speed chase before fleeing on foot here Wednesday afternoon has been identified.
The Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II office in Ahoskie said they have contacted that individual and will release more information once he turns himself in.
NCHP Sgt. Jason Williams said the motorist will be cited for numerous traffic violations.
Sgt. Williams said NCHP Trooper J.C. Copeland was patrolling NC 11 on Wednesday afternoon where he detected a vehicle traveling 86 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The ensuing attempt at a traffic stop turned into a pursuit. The driver of the Chrysler Pacifica continued northbound on NC 11 before turning onto Brickmill Road/Pine Drive in Aulander. That vehicle, later determined to be a rental, eventually crossed over NC 11 Business (Main Street) and then to Quail Hollow Lane where it crashed into a canal. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene to assist in the search.
