AHOSKIE – The “heat” was on, literally and figuratively, here Saturday.

Despite the temperature soaring to the low 90’s, a hundred or so individuals came out to support the Ahoskie Police Department in recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Month.

“Guns down, Prayers up” was held at the all-purpose field adjacent to the Town of Ahoskie Gym on Main Street. There was also a march down Main Street. There, some families of gun violence victims carried signs bearing the names/photos of the loved ones. Some of those family members later shared their stories of how gun violence has caused lasting pain and how it still impacts their daily lives.

“That was the most powerful part of our event, hearing the words of those who lost a family member to gun violence,” said Ahoskie Police Chief Michele Garrett. “We want all to know that these victims of gun violence will never be forgotten.”

The event also featured free food and drinks as well as giveaways, to include gun locks. There were bouncy houses for the kids.

“Interacting with the community is the best way for law enforcement officers to build relationships with those they serve,” Garrett noted. “I’ve made community policing one of my main goals since becoming the police chief.”

Earlier this month at the Ahoskie Town Council meeting, Garrett pointed out that the number of “shots fired” calls answered by her officers is on the decline.

“We all hope and prayer that trend continues,” she stressed.
