Bertie filing ends Friday

WINDSOR – Filing for seats on the non-partisan Bertie County Board of Education and Soil and Water Conservation Board of Supervisors ends this Friday (July 5).

There are two seats on the school board up for grabs during the Nov. 5 General Election. As of Monday, July 1, the two incumbents currently holding those seats are the only ones to have filed.

District 5 School Board incumbent Tarsha Bush Dudley of Republican Road, Windsor, filed on Tuesday, June 11. District 1 incumbent Reba Cooper Carlton filed June 18.

To seek a seat on the Bertie Board of Education, candidates must be 21 years of age, a registered voter, and reside in the District they would represent if elected.

School Board terms are for four years.

The filing fee is $60. The filing fee may be paid with an individual personal check or money order, payable to the Bertie County Board of Elections. Business or corporate checks are not accepted.

Filing also begin on June 10 for one seat on the Bertie County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. Those are also four-year terms. The filing fee is $5.

The only one to file for that seat thus far is John M. Griffin of Lewiston Woodville.

Candidates seeking election to the Soil and Water Board must be 21 years of age. There is no requirement to reside in a particular district.

Notices of Candidacy, together with the proper filing fee, must be in the possession of the Bertie County Board of Elections by the deadline to be accepted. Filing ends at 12 noon on Friday, July 5.

The Bertie Board of Elections Office, located at 210 West Watson Street in Windsor, is open Monday through Friday (8:30 am – 5 pm), except for Thursday, July 4.
