AULANDER – Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin reports that a vehicle stolen in Aulander on June 28 has been recovered in New Jersey.
Ruffin said BCSO deputies were dispatched to Commerce Street in Aulander in reference to a stolen vehicle. Upon deputies arrival, they spoke with the victim who said he was showing a female a rental property and while he was not paying attention the female stole his van.
The case was turned over to Bertie County Investigations Division and entered into NCIC (National Crime Information Center).
On July 2, investigators with the Bertie Sheriff’s Office received a hit from NCIC that the vehicle was located in Vineland, NJ by the police department there.
The van was being operated by Artia Slocum with a Vineland, NJ address. At the time of the stop, Slocum gave a false name to the officers. However, the officers were able to confirm her identify and took her into custody.
During questioning, the officers advised that Slocum admitted she stole the van in North Carolina.
Slocum was charged in New Jersey and the Bertie County Sheriff’s office will be lodging charges as well.
Ruffin said that this time, it’s undetermined Slocum’s connections to Bertie County.
