CHARLOTTE – An arrest has been made by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office for a person wanted by the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.
Hasun Naz’iear Overton, age 19 of Charlotte, has been taken into custody by Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Overton is the suspect of stealing two vehicles from Lewiston Woodville.
Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said the first incident happened on May 2 at 4:50 a.m. at the Duck-Thru convenience store in Lewiston Woodville. The owner of the vehicle went inside the store to make a purchase and upon coming back out he noticed his vehicle was missing.
The vehicle was later located in Northampton County on May 8.
The second incident happened at the Tobacco Shop in Lewiston Woodville on May 30 at 7:25 pm. The owner of the vehicle went inside the store and upon exiting he noticed his vehicle was missing. This vehicle was spotted one day later (May 31) in Gaffney, SC where the driver fled from law enforcement.
Through surveillance cameras and Overton using one of the victim’s bank cards, investigators with the Bertie County Sheriffs Office were able to link Overton to both vehicle thefts. Overton has also been charged in Mecklenburg County with additional vehicle thefts.
Overton is in custody in Mecklenburg County with an upcoming court date in Bertie.
Sheriff Ruffin said Overton has ties to Bertie and Northampton counties.
