The National Weather Service Office in Wakefield, VA has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from 10 am until 8 pm today (Monday) for Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties.

Northampton County is under a Heat Advisory.

In the Warning area, expect dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 106 to 111 degrees expected.

Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

NWS-Wakefield expects this pattern to continue Tuesday and Wednesday where heat index values are expected to range between 106 and 115 degrees.

The early week forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 98 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows are expected around 75 degrees.

There is a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday, but it will still be hot with a high temperature of 96 degrees and a low of 73.
